Marie Curie PhD Positions 2026–27: All 141 Approved Doctoral Networks, Salaries in Rupees and How to Apply
The complete list of Marie Curie Doctoral Networks approved for 2026–2027: every network funded under the 2025 MSCA Doctoral Networks call, the PhD projects they are hiring for, who is eligible, what you will actually take home in PKR, and how to put together an application that gets you to the interview.
Subscribe to Codanics on YouTubeThis list covers only the Doctoral Networks approved in 2026 and starting in 2026–2027. They were selected under the EU call HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN-01-01; their grants were signed in 2026 and the projects start between September 2026 and March 2027, which is when their PhD positions are being advertised. Networks from earlier years are not included.
In this guide
I did my own PhD in a Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme, and I still remember how confusing the first search was. The positions are spread over dozens of network websites, every advert uses the same jargon, and nobody tells you what the salary means once tax is taken out. This guide puts it in one place for this year’s round.
In June 2026 the European Commission signed the grants for the 2025 Doctoral Networks call. I pulled the complete list from CORDIS, the EU’s project database, and checked each network’s website and vacancy pages on 2 November 2026. You will find 141 networks below, 398 individual PhD projects that have already been advertised, and a salary chart in Pakistani rupees for every country these networks hire in.
1What an MSCA Doctoral Network actually is
A Doctoral Network is a group of universities, research institutes and companies in different countries that apply to the EU together for money to train PhD students. If they win, they hire a fixed number of doctoral candidates (the adverts call them DCs), usually between 7 and 15. Each DC has their own project at one host, but trains across the whole network: summer schools, workshops and research stays (called secondments) at partner organisations, often including a company.
Two things make these positions different from a normal PhD. First, you are hired on an employment contract with full social security, not a stipend. Second, you move: you will be working in a country you have not lived in recently, and you will spend time at a second or even third organisation during the PhD.
A position lasts at most 36 months (48 for joint doctorates), and each network is capped at 540 funded person-months, which is why the biggest networks hire 15 people for three years each.
2Who can apply: the official rules
These rules come straight from the Horizon Europe MSCA Work Programme that governs the 2025 call. They apply to every network on this page; each network then adds its own subject requirements on top.
- No PhD yet. You must not hold a doctoral degree on the day you are recruited. If you have defended your thesis but the degree has not been formally awarded, you still count as having a doctorate and are not eligible.
- Any nationality. Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Nigerian: nationality does not matter.
- The mobility rule. You must not have lived or carried out your main activity (work, studies) in the country of the hiring organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months right before your start date. Holidays and compulsory national service do not count.
- Doctoral enrolment. You must be enrolled in a doctoral programme in an EU country or an associated country such as the UK, Norway or Switzerland. The host university handles this once you are selected.
- Industrial doctorates require at least half of the fellowship in the non-academic sector.
On top of these rules, almost every advert asks for a master’s degree (or one completed before the start date) in a relevant field, good English, and sometimes a specific skill such as Python, wet-lab experience or a particular technique. Those extra requirements are listed for each network further down, where the network has published them.
3What you will earn: euros and rupees, before and after tax
The salary is set by the EU, not by the university, and it is the same formula across all 141 networks. Under the 2025 rules each doctoral candidate receives:
- Living allowance: €4,010 a month, multiplied by a country correction coefficient that adjusts for living costs (100% in Belgium, 101.2% in Germany, 132.8% in Denmark, 74.1% in Poland).
- Mobility allowance: €710 a month, for everyone.
- Family allowance: €660 a month extra if you are married or have dependent children.
The catch that surprises most people: the €4,010 is a gross employer amount. The Work Programme says it includes “compulsory deductions under national law, such as employer and employee social security contributions and direct taxes”. So the payslip will show less, and how much less depends heavily on the country.
Monthly pay by host country, in lakh rupees
Switzerland and Denmark look best on paper, and they are, but the cost of living eats much of the difference. Take-home pay in most of Western Europe falls between roughly 7.4 lakh and 11.1 lakh rupees a month, which is comfortable for a single person in a university city once rent is paid.
Where the money goes
Belgium, Germany, France and Italy take the biggest share in tax and social security; the Netherlands, the UK and Denmark leave more in your pocket. Two further things can push your take-home up. Some countries have tax schemes for researchers recruited from abroad (the Netherlands’ 30% ruling, Denmark’s researcher scheme, and impatriate regimes in Italy, Spain and Portugal), and many universities pay the full mobility allowance on top. Ask HR for a payslip estimate once you have an offer; it is a normal question.

Network list: CORDIS, call HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN-01-01 (141 projects). Positions, deadlines and requirements: each network’s website and EURAXESS adverts, checked 2 November 2026. Some networks had nothing online yet; their status will change over the coming months.
6How to apply, step by step
The process is similar in nearly every network. Knowing the shape of it in advance saves you from the most common mistake: finding the perfect project two days before the deadline.
- Shortlist three to five networks. Use the directory above and filter by your field. Read the network’s website, not just the advert; the research programme and the partner list tell you what the supervisors care about.
- Check eligibility against the start date. Count your months for the mobility rule, and make sure your master’s will be finished before you start.
- Pick your projects. Many networks let you apply for up to three projects in one application and rank them. Choose projects you can explain in an interview, not just the ones in your favourite country.
- Email the supervisor (optional but useful). A short, specific email with one question about the project often gets a reply and helps your motivation letter. See the professor email formula.
- Apply through the official portal. Most networks use a single central form. Some ask you to apply on each host university’s own job site instead; the advert will say which.
- Shortlisting and interviews. Shortlisted candidates usually get an online interview with the supervisor. Many networks then hold a joint recruitment event, online or in person, where you meet several supervisors in a day or two.
- Offer, contract and visa. After the offer, the host university sends the documents for your residence permit. For non-EU researchers this is usually a researcher or work permit; the university’s international office will guide you.
Most adverts are also posted on EURAXESS, the EU’s research jobs portal. If you have never used it, this walkthrough shows how to search and set alerts:
7Documents checklist
| Document | What to watch for |
|---|---|
| Academic CV | Two pages, research first: thesis title and supervisor, methods, publications, skills relevant to the project. No father’s name, CNIC or religion. CV guide. |
| Motivation or cover letter | One page per network, naming the specific DC projects and why you fit them. Which one to write. |
| Degree certificates and transcripts | Scanned originals plus English translations if they are not in English. Keep HEC-attested copies ready; some universities ask for them at enrolment. |
| Proof of English | IELTS or TOEFL, or a letter confirming your degree was taught in English. Requirements differ by university, so read the advert. |
| Two or three referees | Names and emails, or letters uploaded directly by the referees. Ask them weeks in advance and send them the project titles. |
| Mobility declaration | Many portals ask you to list where you lived in the last three years. Answer precisely; it is checked again at contract stage. |
8Preparing for the interview
MSCA interviews are usually 30 to 45 minutes with two or three supervisors. Expect a short presentation of your master’s research, questions on the specific project, and a check that you understand what a network PhD involves: travel, secondments and working with industry. Prepare one clear answer to “why this project and not another one in the network?”, because almost every panel asks it.
The playlist below is the one I send to students who message me before their interview. It covers common questions with answers from real Marie Curie candidates, the questions you should ask the panel, and how to behave on Zoom.
9Full workshop and lecture playlists
If you prefer to learn by watching, these two playlists cover the whole process in much more depth than a blog can. The two-day workshop was recorded for Pakistani applicants and walks through finding positions, writing documents and preparing for selection.
Frequently asked questions
Can Pakistani students apply for Marie Curie PhD positions?
Yes. MSCA Doctoral Networks accept doctoral candidates of any nationality. The main condition is the mobility rule: you must not have lived or worked in the country of the hiring organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months before your start date. Most applicants living in Pakistan meet it automatically.
How much does a Marie Curie PhD pay in 2026?
Under the 2025 Doctoral Networks rules, the living allowance is €4,010 a month multiplied by a country coefficient, plus a €710 mobility allowance and €660 a month if you have a family. In Germany that is about €4,768 gross a month, or roughly 8.0 lakh rupees take-home after tax at today's rate.
Do I need a master's degree for an MSCA PhD?
The official rule is only that you must not already hold a doctorate. In practice most positions ask for a master's degree, or one finished before the start date, because you also have to be admitted to a doctoral programme at the university. Read each vacancy for its exact degree requirement.
How many Marie Curie PhD positions can I apply for?
Many networks let you apply for up to three projects within the same network, ranked by preference, and you can apply to as many different networks as you like. Tailor each application; a generic letter sent to fifteen projects rarely works.
When do the 2025 Doctoral Networks start recruiting?
The 141 networks funded under the 2025 call start between September 2026 and March 2027. Most advertise their PhD positions between autumn 2026 and spring 2027, with deadlines usually two to three months before the planned start date.
About the author. Dr. Ammar Tufail is the founder of Codanics and completed his PhD in a Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme. He teaches data science, AI and research skills to students in Urdu and Hindi.
