7  Guide 4 — AI Academic Writing & Publication Agent

7.1 “From Data to Manuscript”

7.2 The problem

Researchers have results but struggle with:

  • writing a coherent paper (especially non-native English writers),
  • formatting for a specific journal,
  • choosing the right journal (scope, impact, cost, acceptance odds),
  • surviving peer review and writing point-by-point responses.

A paper often takes 3–6 months from results to submission, and 40–60% of first submissions are rejected.

7.3 The solution

A multi-agent publishing assistant:

Agent Role Output
Manuscript Agent Builds the IMRaD manuscript from the researcher’s notes/results: title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion manuscript.md
Journal Matching Agent Scores candidate journals on scope fit, impact, open-access cost, turnaround, acceptance probability journal_matches.json
Reviewer Simulation Agent Two or three simulated reviewers with different personas (methodologist, domain expert, statistician) produce numbered comments and a recommendation reviews.json
Revision Agent Produces a point-by-point response letter and a revised manuscript addressing each comment response_letter.md, manuscript_v2.md

7.3.1 Example

Input: a notes.md file with the study summary, key results and a few numbers.

Output:

  • A full manuscript draft with an “AI-assisted writing” statement.
  • Top-5 journal recommendations with reasons.
  • Reviewer 1: “Your methodology lacks validation.” Reviewer 2: “Explain dataset selection.” (with severity).
  • A response letter: “We thank the reviewer for this comment. We have added …” and a revised draft.

7.4 Architecture

                     response_letter.md + manuscript_v2.md

Design rules

  • The Manuscript Agent may not invent results or citations — it writes only from the provided notes and (optionally) a references list from Agent 1/2.
  • Reviewer personas are parameterised (harsh/moderate; methods/domain/stats) → diverse critique.
  • The Revision Agent must quote each comment and mark where the change was made.

7.5 Build steps

Step File What you learn
1 journals.py A small journal knowledge base (name, scope, impact band, OA fee, typical review time) — replace with Scimago/DOAJ/OpenAlex data in production
2 agents.py Manuscript writer, journal matcher (structured), reviewer simulator (structured), revision agent
3 main.py CLI: --notes notes.md, --field, --reviewers 3

Run:

python agent_04_academic_writing\main.py --notes agent_04_academic_writing\sample_notes.md --field "plant science"

7.6 Product extensions

  • Live journal data from OpenAlex/Scimago/DOAJ APIs; predatory-journal blacklist.
  • Formatting engines: Word/LaTeX templates per journal (Elsevier, Springer, IEEE, MDPI, Frontiers).
  • Reference management: BibTeX/Zotero, citation-style rendering (APA, Vancouver).
  • Cover letter, highlights, graphical abstract prompts.
  • Grammar & clarity pass tuned for academic English (a key value for non-native writers).
  • Submission tracking and reminder emails.

7.7 Market value

Customer Value Price
Individual researchers Faster submission, fewer rejections, better English $30/month
Labs Shared templates, co-author workflows $3k–5k/year
Universities More publications per faculty; writing-centre replacement $50k/year
Publishers / journals (B2B) Pre-submission screening, reviewer assistance custom

Comparable: Paperpal, Writefull, SciSpace, Trinka — $10–30/month; Paperpal has institutional deals with hundreds of universities.

7.8 How to sell it

  1. “Reviewer 2 simulator” as a free viral tool: upload an abstract, get a harsh review in 30 seconds.
  2. Writing-centre partnership: universities run writing support; sell seats through them.
  3. Conference sponsorships & workshops: “Write your paper in a week with AI agents”.
  4. Bundle with the Literature Review Agent (intro + related work come from Agent 2).
  5. Publisher partnerships: white-label pre-submission checks.

7.9 Risks & mitigations

Risk Mitigation
Fabricated citations/results Only user-provided notes and retrieved references are allowed; a checker flags unsupported claims
Journal AI-use policies Auto-generate the disclosure statement; keep an edit log
Over-polished but hollow writing Reviewer simulation catches it; “evidence-per-claim” check
Predatory journals Blacklist + warning in journal matching

7.10 90-day roadmap

  • Weeks 1–2: CLI (this repo) → Weeks 3–6: Word/LaTeX export + live journal data → Weeks 7–10: grammar pass + Zotero → Weeks 11–13: submission tracker & co-author workspace.
